article details

Metta and Lawrence are two Indonesian students who have had their heart set on a successful career in Information Technology for many years. Indomedia was interested to find out how INSEARCH, a pathway provider to the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), helped them follow their dream.

Name: Metta Dewi

Nationality: Indonesian

Pathway: Diploma of Information Technology at INSEARCH - UTS Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.

“Because of the skills and knowledge I picked up at INSEARCH - I feel like I have an advantage over most of my colleagues at UTS! I think they wish they had studied at INSEARCH too…”

Why did you choose to study at INSEARCH?

Well, back at home in Indonesia, INSEARCH has a really good reputation and I have heard from other friends that it’s a great way to get into the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

I guess I also wanted to study at a reputable institute and UTS is a well known university, particularly for studying Technology.

Having lots of family and friends who have graduated at INSEARCH and then gone on to study at UTS really helped cement my decision, it’s just a great stepping stone to Uni.

What did you like most about INSEARCH?

I really enjoyed my time at INSEARCH. One of the things I really liked was the small class sizes – so each student receives individual attention from the teaching staff and it allows for a lot of class interaction - which makes it enjoyable.

The environment at INSEARCH is really multicultural which is great for preparing you for a future international career.

I have also now got friends and pen pals all over the world – all of them who I met at INSEARCH!”

I guess the last thing was the facilities at INSEARCH – you get to use the UTS Library and have access to 24 hour computer labs which is really good. Plus the social clubs are a great way to make friends for new students.

Why did you choose to study I.T?

I love all things computers. I particularly enjoy surfing the internet, its’ my favourite hobby. Although I am yet to deicide what area of IT I want to pursue for my career, I hope to assist my parents with their supplies business in Indonesia. Currently they use a lot of manual processes and I would like to help them transition over to using digital. It would save them a lot of time and help the business.

If other students are thinking about studying in Sydney what would you tell them?

I would definitely encourage anyone thinking about studying in Sydney to do it!!

What I love most about Sydney is the variety – the cultures, the people and the beautiful places you can go and visit. I really enjoy exploring Sydney with the friends I have made at INSEARCH and UTS. I particularly love going to the homes of my Australian friends and experiencing the Australian way of life. People are very friendly and welcoming here, which has made it so easy to adjust to Australia.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years from now?

Studying IT has really exposed me to the multitude of careers in I.T! Its’ an exciting place to be with lots of opportunity – I’m still yet to decide what area interests me the most.

My studies have provided me with lots of practical experience and we even get to work with real clients for some of our projects.

In three years from now I will be a qualified graduate with practical skills ready to be put to use. There is so many opportunities out there in a growing industry - I CANT WAIT!!

Name: Lawrence Lukito

Nationality: Indonesian

Pathway: Diploma of Information Technology at INSEARCH - UTS Bachelor of Computing

Where is he now: Working as a business analyst in his role with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Lawrence used his INSEARCH diploma to go straight into the second year at UTS without taking extra time to complete his degree.

“The staff at INSEARCH and UTS ensured the transition between the two was smooth for me,” says Lawrence. “UTS staff certainly recognise INSEARCH graduates and offered me great assistance.” Lawrence found some differences between studying at INSEARCH and studying at UTS. “Group work at UTS is more challenging, but this is a good thing, because you must be challenged in order to grow. Generally, if you can handle the INSEARCH course, then you should be fine at UTS.”

Lawrence has always enjoyed making friends from different cultures and enjoyed the

dynamic and multicultural study environment at INSEARCH.

“Being the UTS provider of choice, INSEARCH also maintains many of the same

course structures and teaching methods as UTS, meaning you are also exposed to the highly

practical course structure that UTS has become famous for.”

Lawrence is now working at the Commonwealth Bank in what he describes as his dream job.

“INSEARCH definitely equipped me with excellent IT knowledge and the experience to kick-start my IT education and career. As far as the future goes, I hope that one day I will be able to find the right time and start establishing my own business.”
